Toxicity or Deficiency?

TOXICITY VS DEFICIENCY

Two Sides of the Same Coin

Many diseases, disorders, deficiencies and toxicities share common symptoms. If you’ve ever done an internet search for your own symptoms, you might have been faced with a list of multiple, complex and sometimes serious illnesses.

The emergence of symptoms is an invitation for you to listen to your body and shine a light on ‘what’s going on in there?’. Understanding that symptoms are simply the unique way your body communicates with you is important. Symptoms indicate that either something is present in your body that shouldn’t be (toxicity), OR that something that should be present in your body is NOT (deficiency).

Both toxicity and deficiency can lead to any number of health problems.

What is the difference between TOXICITY or DEFICIENCY?

Toxicity happens when you are exposed to….well, toxins. Everyday, you are faced with additives, preservatives, herbicides, pesticides and other chemicals in your environment and food. Sometimes you choose the exposure through our consumption of caffeine, nicotine, drugs, alcohol, non-organic foods and even prescription medications. Sometimes your exposure is more insidious through invisible chemicals in the air you breathe, the water you drink and the environment where you live and work.

Deficiency happens for a number of reasons. Sometimes food itself is deficient due to the depletion of nutrients in our soil, over-refining of the food during processing, or lapse in time between when the food is grown to when you actually eat it. Other times, your body is unable to absorb and use the nutrients you do consume (whether through food or supplements) due to illness, allergy, imbalance or even stress.

What about prescription medications?
Many drugs are designed to interrupt normal function of the body by blocking receptors and disconnecting pathways. While this often resolves the experience of symptoms, at least temporarily, the question that is rarely asked is “what happens over time?” A holistic mindset seeks to uncover root causes and restore function.
